CSG 1st at “Garden in a City” Show
Evanston-based design/build firm receives top award at inaugural urban gardening event.
Chicago Specialty Gardens, Inc. (CSG) has won top honors at the first “Garden in a City” urban gardening show hosted by the City of Chicago. CSG was one of over 30 top landscape architecture, design/build and landscape contracting firms vying for cash awards and honors at the first-ever American urban gardening show.
CSG received $25,000 for its first place showing.
“This is a fantastic win for our company and reflects the hard work of our Rooftop Garden Division staff, most notably Bill Mitchell, our Rooftop Garden Designer, and Julie deLeon, our Garden Stylist” said Phil Cleland, the company’s president. “They and the support staff and installation crew executed Bill’s design flawlessly. We’re very excited about this achievement.
“We’d like to thank Mayor Daley and his office for their tireless efforts on behalf of city beautification and greening over the years, as well as the Park District, Parkways Foundation, DHLA, their staffs and all the support organizations and personnel who pulled together to make this
event happen” Cleland continued. “We also want to pay honors to our colleagues at the show who collectively created many innovative and challenging works. We thank them for their contributions and look forward to working alongside them next year.”
“Finally, we’d also like to thank all of our sponsors who were instrumental in contributing to the success of our final design; JANUS et Cie, Gloster Furniture, Backyard BBQ Store, Roy Boyd Gallery, Lurvey’s Garden Center and Lake Street Landscape Supply.”
The company’s installation was entitled “Reversing The Flow: Chicago’s Architectural Heritage and the Rooftop Living Movement.” The design paid tribute to Chicago architectural icons such as the Chicago river, the city’s bridges, skyscrapers and green spaces, and attempted to capture the city’s energy and sophistication. Signage accompanying the exhibit articulated the city’s architectural history and pointed toward the growing trend toward building out rooftop, garage roof and elevated terraces and decks as gardens and living spaces.
“Garden in a City” is the country’s first urban gardening show, showcasing the works of top firms in addressing common urban gardening problems. The show emphasized sustainability in design and construction, energy savings, water management and related environmentally progressive design and building practices.
