Carpentry Apprentice
The carpentry apprentice position is a 9-month seasonal position with potential for year-round work which involves working within a small team environment to construct and install structural components for our client’s garden spaces. Structural components include: decking and substructure components; fence panels; trellis panels; planter boxes; benches and seating; pergolas and arbors; etc. These components are largely made of wood although we also work in metal structural forms, metal sheeting, bamboo, willow and other natural types and forms of materials. The carpentry apprentice will be responsible for: measuring, sawing and joining of rough carpentry components; construction of finished carpentry components; sealing or staining; installing components at job site; roughing in of irrigation tubing and lighting cable; and related tasks. Construction takes place primarily in the company’s work yard/shop in Evanston; job sites are primarily on Chicago’s north side and northern suburbs.
The carpentry apprentice reports to the job foreman or construction manager.
Requirements:
- Self-starter with ability to manage time and project work efficiently
- Relevant experience/background in carpentry, landscape construction, construction trades, arts, etc.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license and clean record
- US citizen documentation
- Due to location of worksites, residence within city is desirable

Carpentry Foreman
Chicago Specialty Gardens, Inc. seeks an experienced, motivated and organized Carpentry Foreman for our Rooftop Garden Division. CSG is an award-winning, full-service urban garden design/build firm serving a Chicago and North Shore clientele.
CSG is a small, highly creative and adventurous group of designers/installers working in a broad range of materials and technologies. Our business is focused on the designing and installation of creative and artistic gardens in a variety of settings. These components are largely made of wood although we also work in metal structural forms, metal sheeting, bamboo, willow and other natural types and forms of materials.
The Carpentry Foreman position involves day-to-day management of the company’s projects, including: overseeing several small crews of fabricators and installers responsible for construction of CSG’s rooftop garden and landscape architecture components (planter boxes, fencing, pergolas, decking, arbors and related items); mobilization to the job site of these materials; and installation and finish work of these components. The foreman interacts regularly with designers, clients, suppliers and company personnel responsible for related design/install tasks.
Backgrounds in the creative or visual arts, or other areas of design, are helpful. The position requires the ability to be flexible, focused and able to work in a small team environment under frequently tight schedules and in both indoor and outdoor settings. Candidates should have a minimum 5 years experience in the field with a breadth of experience in rough and finished carpentry construction, as well as relevant project and people management experience. Field Support Technician
The Field Support Technician is a seasonal (9-month) position responsible for a wide range of duties and tasks across all three of the company’s divisions. The role of the Field Support Technician is that of a very mobile, highly organized, semi-skilled technician with knowledge in various specialties.
The Field Support Technician’s responsibilities include:
- Installation and maintenance of the company’s low-voltage landscape lighting systems and its micro-irrigation systems
- Assisting the Garden Stylist in arranging for deliveries and installation of client furnishings
- Managing the Rooftop Garden Maintenance program
- Serving as a roving free-lance helper for all company divisions
The Field Support Technician reports to the division heads.
Requirements:
- Self-starter with ability to manage time efficiently and responsibly
- Ability to quickly move between projects; superior project coordination skills; physical strength required for installation duties; superior communications skills in dealing with clients, suppliers, etc.; mechanical aptitude
- Relevant experience/background in hardscape, landscape construction, construction trades, arts, etc.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license and clean record
