Chicago Specialty Gardens Awarded Silver for Chicago

HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, June 1, 2006 – Chicago Specialty Gardens, Inc. has been recognized by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) with a Silver Award for its design and building of a Chicago high-rise terrace garden. The award was part of APLD's 2006 Landscape Design Awards Program.
"This award reflects an ongoing recognition on the part of the professional landscape design community that rooftop and high-rise gardens can be every bit as complex and challenging as landscape gardens" said Phil Cleland, the company's president.
"It reminds me of what was once said of Ginger Rogers", continued Cleland. "She did everything Fred Astaire could do, but she did it backwards and in high heels. That's what we do when we create rooftop garden spaces."
The installation took place on an exposed 6th story terrace overlooking Chicago's River North entertainment district. The company used patterned marble and clear cedar to visually separate dining and lounge areas of the garden, with an overhead shade pergola for protection from the sun. Large planter boxes and plantings provide relief from the wind and give visual interest. A custom willow screen wall hanging is a focal point, and colorful annual plantings drape over railing planters.
The garden is lit at night with low-voltage lighting, and a micro-irrigation system keeps all plantings watered throughout the season.
