The Evanston-based design/build firm receives a high honor from the Illinois Chapter of the ASLA for its work on a residential Chicago project.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, August 22, 2005 Chicago Specialty Gardens, Inc. has been recognized by the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for its design and building of a Chicago residential landscape. The ASLA made the announcement on Monday, bestowing an "Award of Honor" on the company as part of its 2005 Awards program.
"Receiving ASLA's Award of Honor is the result of a lot of hard work by many people at Chicago Specialty Gardens. Most notably, Shawn Weidner, our Landscape Designer, and Bill Mitchell, our Construction Manager, collaborated on the refinement and final execution of Shawn's design. They both deserve a lot of credit for this award, the first of which we hope will be many from the ASLA," said Phil Cleland, Chicago Specialty Gardens' President and Owner.
"Our client, Dr. Peter Georgiou, also deserves much credit for providing us with his broad vision of the garden space and giving us the freedom and ongoing commitment to make it a reality," continued Cleland.
Dr. Georgiou's new home in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood was in need of a major makeover to the rear garden space, which Dr. Georgiou hoped to turn into a secluded haven for relaxing and entertaining. Chicago Specialty Gardens developed the garden design to take into account the need for a whirlpool spa; deck and grill space; patio and entertaining space; and a rich array of plantings for color, texture and fragrance. The resulting design makes use of sealed clear cedar for the decking, pergola and trelliswork; bluestone and weathered wallstone for the patio and raised beds; and a mix of evergreens, roses, ornamental grasses, fragrant vines, shrubs, annuals and groundcover for the planting beds. Landscape lighting highlights trees, plantings and architectural elements, and a micro-irrigation system waters all the planting beds as well as large hanging planter boxes on the deck on a scheduled basis.
Chicago Specialty Gardens will receive the award December 9, 2005, at the ASLA Awards ceremony at the Westin River North in Chicago, Illinois.
