The young professional couple who came to us with their rooftop project wanted to attain several goals, but primary was the need for a super-cool lounging spot overlooking the hip East Lakeview neighborhood of trendy shops, clubs and ethnic restaurants. Central to the lounge concept was the outdoor bar/kitchen duet, with custom-poured concrete bar and food prep areas, refrigeration units, wet bar and top-notch grill. Directly adjacent was the pergola to provide dense shade and a feeling of enclosure; tall, full arborvitae evergreens provide a soft wall along one side. Bench seating, planter boxes of clipped boxwood and natural stone pavers are centered around a custom-built, powder-coated aluminum water feature, which itself sits in front of a backlit, aqua blue screen of 3Form recycled resin (pattern: “Wave”). All the spaces are lit softly, with uplights on the Whitespire Birch trees, dimmable downlights hidden in the pergola, and decklights throughout.

At the other end of the rooftop, maintenance-free SynLawn synthetic turf provides a soft surface underfoot while multiple planter boxes hold smokebush and a wide array of tropical and seasonal annuals planted by the owners themselves. All the plants are irrigated, of course, by way of a micro-irrigation system hidden beneath the raised deck pedestal system. Decorative blue Mexican La Paz pebbles designed into the ground plane provide repetition and tie all the spaces together.

This East Lakeview East Lakeview Rooftop Lounge is truly in a one-of-a kind neighborhood.
