This private second-story terrace off our client’s townhouse living room was the second project we had undertaken for the owners, and we wanted to turn this very modest space into a relaxing open-air escape for these hard-working folks. The resulting garden might be classified as “deep lounge” if it were a music genre, for it truly creates a super laid back atmosphere perfect for small gatherings or a simple bottle of wine for two.
We needed to use the vertical space wisely to avoid clutter, so we built eye-catching framed willow panels to enclose the space and add a new texture to the mix. Sleek metal IAP containers hold small tree varieties, and additional planter boxes carry colorful annuals and are lined up atop the parapet wall to save space.
Grasses sway in the evening breeze, and the garden comes alive with night lighting. Details of the plants, the willow screens, even the decorative pebble islands draw the eye. Colorful chairs and cushions lend a dramatic counterpoint to the dark tones of the wood, and these elements combine to create a truly fresh but relaxing vibe.
