The Wicker Park neighborhood, full of artists, galleries and hip nightlife, is a good place to try some daring ideas. When we saw the completely barren garage rooftop of our client's new home we thought, "Hmm, what neat new things can we try here?"
We started by deciding to stain the beige deck a rich burnt red to create immediate visual interest and pop. Shielding the roof from the intense summer sun required a shade structure; we chose a pattern of tightly spaced cedar strips mounted to massive 2" by 12" cedar beams. For screening we created a similar horizontal pattern which allowed sun and air flows but preserved our client's privacy. Evergreen plantings provide further privacy, and a bamboo pole design element continues the privacy theme with a decorative twist.
A meandering water feature adds movement, sound and reflected light elements to the garden. In the lounge and dining areas sophisticated outdoor furniture provides space for relaxation and conversation. Nighttime illumination brings this elevated garden to life at night.
