A classic rowhouse garden on a quiet street.

Our clients and their kids are the fortunate occupants of this classic rowhouse on Chicago’s North side. Set on a quiet, leafy street, the home stands should-to-shoulder with similar but slightly different homes of this style. Classical dentil work is a highlight of this style, with uniform rows of small wooden block “teeth” running along the cornice of the front porch.

Our design intent was to use a soft, green plant palette to avoid excess color and “noise” which could detract from the beautiful architecture, brick and ornamental ironwork featured in the front garden. A mix of hydrangea, groundcover and low grass serve as neutral elements, allowing the house to shine. And in the evening, as the sun sets in the West, the flickering light from classical gas lanterns flanking the front door casts a warm glow over the garden.
